May 25, 2020 – Hospitality NL is very pleased with the recent announcement from the Provincial Government regarding a $25 Million commitment for eligible tourism operators in Newfoundland and Labrador. Hospitality NL’s advocacy efforts have always focused on supporting professional licensed operators, highlighting the economic value of the travel and tourism industry in the province and since the COVID-19 pandemic – the need for programs that address business liquidity.
The announcement of the “Tourism and Hospitality Support Program” gives a very strong indication of governments commitment to the tourism industry and by making it a non-repayable working capital contribution, this support program offers direct relief to operators as opposed to a deferral.
“Today’s announcement recognizes the significance of the tourism industry as a key economic driver for communities,” says Hospitality NL Chair, Steve Denty. “Hospitality NL’s consultations with the Provincial Government on behalf of the tourism industry have been very constructive and we acknowledge that this is a great step in the right direction to get industry operators the support they need to get back to work and safely ensure travel around the province is advanced quickly.”
Tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador as a 1.14 billion dollar industry is considered to be one of the first and hardest hit sectors in the province as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism has shown its ability for resilience when responding to past crisis, however, the depth and breadth of COVID-19 has been unprecedented. This relief package will help struggling operators pivot their businesses to provide safe, quality experiences that our brand is world renown for.
As a professional industry, Tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador – with over 2,700 tourism-related businesses is a prominent employer of over 20,000 jobs and is a key component to economic diversification, particularly for rural areas of the province.
