Remembering Roger Jamieson: A Pioneer and Visionary in Newfoundland and Labrador’s Tourism Industry

Please see the following message from the Chair of Hospitality NL.

It is with profound sadness today that we acknowledge the passing of Roger Jamieson on Saturday, June 1, 2024. A cherished past Chair/President of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, and a pillar of our tourism community in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Roger was the heart and soul behind Kilmory Resort, a four-star, multi-season cottage resort and RV park. From its inception in 1989 to its opening in 1991, Roger’s vision and dedication transformed Kilmory Resort into one of the most successful and renowned resort operations in our province. His tireless efforts and innovative spirit have seen the resort undergo significant expansions over the past decade, cementing its reputation as a premier destination.

Roger’s contributions extended far beyond his resort. In 2002, he was appointed to the Canadian Tourism Commission Board of Directors as the Private Sector Representative for Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia. His leadership was further recognized when he joined the Executive Committee of the CTC in 2003, where he chaired the Corporate Governance and Nominating Committees until the end of his term in 2006. He also served on the board of directors of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada.

His influence was also felt at the Marble Mountain Development Corporation, where he served as Chair and CEO for seven years, guiding the operations of the $30 million Marble Mountain Ski Resort. His expertise was sought by the Federal Minister of Transport in 2005, where he co-authored the pivotal report “A Strategy for the Future of Marine Atlantic Inc.”

Roger’s passion for the tourism industry was evident in his extensive volunteer work. He served as a director of the Heritage Run Tourism Association, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Campground and Attractions Operators Association and held numerous other roles in various industry associations. His tenure on the board of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, including a term as President and Past-President, was marked by his efforts to strengthen and expand the organization. Most recently Roger chaired the NL Tourism Board as the board stewarded the development of Vision 2026.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Roger received numerous awards, including the Doug Wheeler Award and the Golden Umbrella Award in 2005, making him the only individual to receive both in the same year. In 2013, he was honored with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his volunteerism in the Canadian tourism industry. Also, in 2022 Roger and Kilmory Resort received the Accommodator Award of Excellence.

Roger’s legacy is one of dedication, vision, and a relentless commitment to excellence. His impact on the tourism industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, and indeed across Canada, will be felt for generations to come.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his remarkable achievements and the indelible mark he has left on our industry. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
