The Clarenville Area Chamber of Commerce presents new design for 11th Annual NL Christmas Ornament - November 23, 2009
For the 11th consecutive year, the Clarenville Area Chamber of Commerce (CACC) continues to showcase a design of a local talented artist on the Newfoundland and Labrador Christmas Ornament.

The CACC is pleased to announce Mary Dunphy is the artist for the 2009 Newfoundland and Labrador Christmas Ornament. Mary’s design, Daddy’s Little Star, captures the Child’s innocence and excitement while helping to prepare for Santa’s magical arrival.

This fund-raising project allows the CACC to be one of a few Chambers in the province to reach self-sufficiency. The Chamber has surpassed expectations of popularity and profit with the annual Christmas Ornament Project. The project has proved to be a booming success with high expectations for it’s continued growth.

For eleven years, the Chamber has been producing unique traditional Newfoundland themed pewter Christmas ornaments. The Ornament Project showcases local, talented artists with the opportunity to attach their names to this popular collector’s series, increasing exposure for their passion, art. Each of the ornaments is themed with enchanting inspirations of Newfoundland and Labrador traditions.

When asked about the piece, Mary says “While browsing through an album of old photographs I came across a photo of my son, Adam on his dad’s shoulders and reaching to place the star on the Christmas tree. Those little moments in time are so precious and a child’s excitement while helping to decorate the tree and prepare for Santa’s arrival adds so much joy to the holidays. The anticipation and innocence of children are what makes Christmas such a special occasion. Adam will always be daddy’s little star.

Mary (Power) Dunphy was born and raised in Freshwater, Placentia Bay, the 5th of 8 children, and moved to St. John's in 1975 where she resides today with her husband, Larry and their daughter, Erin. Mary always loved to draw, and pursued a career as an engineering designer for 27 years, eventually working in the petrochemical field as a piping designer on projects including Hibernia and Terra Nova FPSO. Mary is currently participating in art classes with Ed Roche at the Ed Roche School of Art in St. John’s. She is a realist artist and is a member of Realist Artists of Newfoundland and Labrador (RANL). Mary loves to paint people in situations that capture special moments in their lives.

Mary’s design, Daddy’s Little Star, is available as a pewter ornament as well as limited edition prints, art cards, and matted art cards in stores across the province and Canada. These products offer a little taste of home for Newfoundlanders who are living away and who aren’t fortunate enough to make it home for the holidays.
