| CORONA COLLEGE WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION - October 30, 2008 | CORONA COLLEGE WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION IN THE MINING INDUSTRY
Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, October 30, 2008- Corona College has received national recognition from the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MIHR) of Canada.
MIHR chose Corona College, through a national competition of universities and colleges, as a pilot site for its national project, From Forestry to Mining (FF2M). This FF2M project will produce as a final outcome a Labour Market Transition Resource Kit for Employers. This kit will provide information and resources that will allow mining employers to successfully transition former forestry workers to mining occupations. MIHR is forecasting a nationwide shortage of more than 92,000 miners over the next ten years. Through this project, Corona College will play an important role to help eliminate this shortage.
Bernice Walker, President of Corona College, appreciates this national recognition and the challenge it offers. “The Mining Industry Human Resources Council recognizes Corona College’s commitment and leadership in developing programs to help address shortages in this industry. Our mining programs, developed through partnerships with mining industry giants such as Teck and CABO, are second to none.” Ms. Walker continued, “With the long-term economic decline in industries such as manufacturing, forestry, and farming, Corona College appreciates the opportunity to transition workers from such industries to mining occupations.”
