Labatt Breweries Newfoundland were selected last evening from a group of seven progressive employers to receive the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council’s (NLEC’s) Employer of Distinction Award (Large Employer Category).

The criteria for the Employer of Distinction award is designed to recognize this change in the employment landscape and recognize those employers that view employees as something greater than the labour they provide.

Becoming an Employer of Distinction means more than building a good place to work. It means becoming an organization that encourages excellence in all areas of progressive employment relationships. The award recognizes leadership, innovation, creativity and a fundamental belief in the value of a healthy, safe and motivated workforce. An Employer of Distinction is, simply put, one who view employees as vital and integral to the organization’s success.

The criteria to be short-listed for the award are:

Criteria # 1
A Best Practices Approach

The Employer of Distinction must demonstrate an overwhelming contribution to the field of human resources and employ tactics and strategies that others businesses can develop into their own best practices. The practices employed by the Employer of Distinction must be based on a foundation of ethics and values that serve to reinforce the development and sustainability of a healthy work environment.

Criteria #2
Health and Safety Practices

The Employer of Distinction must fully recognize the benefits of how a healthy work environment enables and supports healthy lifestyles, behaviors, and coping skills for dealing with life in healthy ways. They must have an unwavering commitment to educating and enforcing health and safety practices and a proven track record of preventing injuries.

Criteria #3
Presence in the Community

The Employer of Distinction must recognize and understand how a healthy community can make for a healthy bottom line. The organization should engage in acts of strategic and meaningful social activity and align those acts with the goals of their workforce.

Criteria #4
Stakeholder Awareness

The Employer of Distinction must recognize the successful link between an organization’s strategy and its human resources. Human resources are a component of strategic partnership and Employers of Distinction initiate strategies that are aligned with the strategic plan of the organization.

Criteria #5
Compensation and Advancement

The Employer of Distinction must raise the bar regarding reasonable, equitable and creative compensation packages. Compensation packages should help align the goals of employees with the goals of the organization. They should also provide opportunity for employees to grow and advance their careers in the organization.
