Description
Welcome to the Woodstock Colonial!
Although this establishment dates back to 1927, there had been a carriage house located in the area, most possibly on this site in the early 1800’s providing a haven for weary travelers and serving hearty meals. The Woodstock carries on a tradition of comfortable fine dining in an old world atmosphere with warm friendly staff and exquisite ambiance.
The original Crown Land Grant of the property now occupied by the restaurant was given to one Henry David Wilton. That grant conveyed title to the bulk of property known locally as “Woodstock”. It is believed that the name “Woodstock” comes from the English town of Woodstock, near Oxford – - a popular stopover for early travelers to the north from London. The Newfoundland Woodstock was the natural place for refreshment of man, woman and beast, journeying out from old-time St. John’s. Woodstock nestles cozily within its own sheltered valley, at the junction of two, delightful rivers.
The existence of the catering establishment can be traced back to the early 1800’s. In the book by J. B. Jukes, “Excursions In and About Newfoundland During the Years 1839 and 1840”, the site of the Woodstock was a rustic setting and welcome resting spot for those who ventured forth from St. John’s.
In keeping with our old-time setting, you will be delighted with Woodstock’s exclusive, home cooked specialties, including the finest, feast selections from our old colonial days. You can also enjoy delicious, traditional, “old country” favorites. To please our guests, and in keeping with our seafaring heritage, you will discover our excellent variety of seafood choices.
For a true taste of Newfoundland, Woodstock offers you gracious service, in the most distinctive and authentic setting. We offer the freshest seafood year round as well as the traditional Newfoundland dishes like “flipper pie”, “rabbit pie”, “steak and kidney pie” , “steak and mushroom pie”, and “caribou pot pie” to name just a few.
