Help Protect Heritage Lighthouses!
In February 2012, Parks Canada and the Provincial Department of Tourism, Culture & Recreation, together with the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador will be holding community information sessions in Newfoundland to present information on the nomination, designation, and protection of heritage lighthouses.
Clarenville Information Session:
Date: Tuesday, February 14
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Clarenville InnThe Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act
The Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act enables the designation and protection of federally owned lighthouses with significant heritage value. The Act depends on Canadians to support lighthouses by nominating them for designation through a petition.
Ninety-five (95) lighthouses across Canada have been nominated for designation under the Act through a public petition process. The number of petitions received illustrates the depth of attachment and appreciation Canadians feel for these iconic buildings. Three (3) petitions have been received for lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The time to petition to save heritage lighthouses is drawing to a close. Residents of Canada may nominate lighthouses for designation up to and including 29 May 2012 by forwarding a petition to Parks Canada.
The sessions will also explore opportunities for adaptive re-use of surplus lighthouse. Many of the lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador operated by the federal government have been declared surplus which opens up development opportunities for community groups and the private sector.
